Effect of Colostomy care Teaching and Demonstration on Knowledge and Practice among Colostomy child Caregivers: a Hospital-based Study

ABSTRACT


Caregiver knowledge is important for colostomy care of child. A pre-experimental one group pre-test and post-test study was conducted to evaluate the effect of colostomy care teaching and demonstration on knowledge and practice among colostomy child caregivers at paediatric surgery ward in selected hospitals of West Bengal. The purpose of the study was to improve the knowledge and practice of caregiver on colostomy care. Non-probability purposive sampling technique was used to select the 35 caregivers of colostomy child. Semi structured interview schedule was used to collect demographic data. Structured interview schedule and observation checklist was used to assess knowledge and practice of caregiver on colostomy care respectively. The study findings revealed that after administration of teaching and demonstration among caregiver mean post-test knowledge score (13.86) was higher than the mean pre-test knowledge score (4.46) with significant difference between pre-test and post-test knowledge score ( t 34= 23.46, 0.05) and mean post-test practice score (6.80) was higher than mean pre-test practice score (2.51) with significant difference between pre-test and post-test practice score ( t 34= 20.67, 0.05).
